Before I start I just wanted to say that you would be surprised by the different search queries people use that land our little old page. Since these people may not be friends or family, I thought it might be a good idea to give a little advice on our vast wedding planning experience (italics mean sarcasm here).
Here’s a little bit of advice on doing your registry (feel free to comment with any additional tips!).
- The scanner gun is not as cool as you think. Some may disagree, but they probably work for the scanner gun industry. First off, it doesn’t scan from long distances. Now I know you’re thinking to yourself, why do I want it to scan long distances? So you can scan electronics and other fun stuff your fiance won’t let you put on the registry. Think I’m lying? Take a look at our registry. See a Playstation 3
on there? Maybe Lost – The Complete Third Season
? Nope. I blame the scanner gun (and the fact that Macy’s doesn’t carry the mentioned products).
- It’s going to take more time than you think. First off, you have to listen to a little speech from the registry lady (or dude I suppose). This takes at least a half hour. They’ll tell all about the percentage back you’ll get and how you can earn free gifts if you put $6,000 worth of luggage on your registry. Blah, blah, blah. Some people are probably into the free stuff they give you, but we weren’t. We wanted the scanner gun (only to find out it sucks). Now they’ve let you loose on the store…awesome, right? Wrong. This leads me to the next bit of advice…
- Come prepared! As cheesy as it may sound, if you don’t come prepared with a list of what you need, as well as a list of things you want, you’ll be screwed. There’s something like 80 different brands of pots and pans. Do you want stainless steel or infused anodized cookware? And how many pots and pans does one person really need? This doesn’t even get started on the china, flatwear, towels, bedding, and so on.
- Register and more than one store. Sure Macy’s and Crate and Barrel are two great options for registry, but there weren’t any Mod Chip and Dip serving platters or coasters made from old records. In comes UncommonGoods to fill that void.
That’s it for the tips right now. I’m sure they’ll be more registry tips as the date approaches.
